Marsh Harbour, Bahamas — The end of the year will see the beginning of construction for Abaco’s first hospital, the Prime Minister announced. Dundas Town, near the new administration building, is the proposed site of the new facility. Once construction is complete, this hospital will effectively replace the current government clinic. The government clinic which, at the time of this writing, is on strike due to reported deplorable conditions. More on this story later.

Though groundbreaking is slated to start at the end of this year, many details are still being planned out with regards to size, services and equipment provided. One focal point of the hospital will be remote patient care with specialists in Nassau. This technology has already proven itself useful for a nation which, though resourceful, often struggles with the geographic separation of its communities. A hospital will also reduce the need for cases requiring an airlift.
